Morgan Stimson

Candidate for Student Fee Committee and Senate

What issues are most important to you?

The issues that are most important to me are accountability of student government on all levels, and the problems that affect student/teacher relations, more specifically the adjunct faculty. What happens to them really hurts students as well.

What was your first 'political' experience?

My first political experience was in elementary school student council, but I really started actively working in politics during high school. In high school I was apart of the Colorado Student Congress, and made it to the First Alternate position to represent the Rocky Mountain Region. I also have had years of public speaking experience.

My three goals for office next year are as follows:
  1. Increased accountability within the SFC. I feel that currently the SFC does not provide a system where students feel welcome and treated as equals when their budgetary needs are being discussed. I wish to change this system so that all student groups are on equal footing.
  2. I want to increase accessability in all forms. I want people to be able to have access to student government so they feel that their opinion and ideas matter in the political scheme of things. As for shared governance, I think that students need to have a part in things that occur in the University.
  3. I also would like to continue to pass legislation improving the quality of life for all students at PSU.

Fun Facts:

  • My favorite restaurant here in portland at least is the Roxy or P.F.Changs.
  • My favorite book is "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" by Dee Brown its this really cool book about what the Government called the Native American Situation from 1820-1890, but really it was the wars that resulted in the removal of so many people to reservations and loss of so many tribes in the United States.
  • In Colorado where I'm from, I have 3 cats name Attilla, Cady and Wampus and a Dog named Hilde
  • My favorite color is Blue.
  • If I could have dinner with two people dead of alive, I would want to have dinner with Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey.  These two women have affected the world of conservation so much that I strive to be that way in my life.  They have been my heros in Science since I was around seven years old. Jane Goodall or the Monkey lady, for those of you who know her for her work in Tanzania with the chimps, is the United Nations Ambassador for peace. Dian Fossey died doing her work researching and saving the Mountain Gorillas of Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. I feel that my career in Biology and Politics will help me in the future to conserve wildlife and the environments in which they live for the future.
